Among the authoritative voices speaking at the ‘40 Years of Medica: Innovating Health for Tomorrow’ event to celebrate four decades of research and innovation by Medica, was Prof. Claudio Ronco, one of the world's leading experts in nephrology, who gave a contribution on the subject of ‘Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine: a look at the future’.
‘The technological evolution of multi-organ support systems now dates back almost half a century,’ explained Prof. Ronco, "when we started with the first renal support devices, such as continuous arteriovenous haemofiltration. Since then, innovation has led to the development of technologies capable of assisting not only the kidney, but also other vital organs'.
A particularly significant aspect of his speech concerned the paediatric field: ‘Medica has developed, in collaboration with the Istituto Internazionale di Ricerca Renale di Vicenza, the Carpe Diem project, the only device in the world designed for infants with low body weight’.
Looking to the future, Prof. Ronco foresees a substantial evolution: ‘We can imagine support systems that are not only artificial, but bio-hybrid, able to interact with the human body not only on a clinical and physical level, but also on a biological level’.
